Words for God in English Tanak/OT
There are three different words in OT that are mainly used in reference to our Creator
- Adonai for Lord
- Elohiym for God
- Yahuah or YHVH for LORD
Each of the word used in context and references, can yield a rich study of Hebrews Ch1 due to the Psalm references. The word for God, Elohiym H430 is used 2346 times for God, 244 times for god, 5 times for judge, once for GOD. There are also times when its used for mighty, godly. We will study the differences in the next section, and how it impacts our understanding using the opaque english term of God.
Elohiym & Yah
As we saw above, Elohiym is normally translated as God, but there are several occasions where its translated differently.
- [Gen23:6] its in reference to Abraham as mighty prince
- [Gen30:8] for great wrestling, with Leah as Rebkah gave birth to Naphtali
- [Gen31:32] used for the terraphim of Laban, which Rebkah carried with her
- [Joshua22:22] Yah is referred to as Elohiym of Elohiym
- [Judges8:33] for Bal'Berith
- [1Sam2:25] for the great trembling
- [Psa8:5] for angels
- [Exo9:28] for mighty thunderings
- [Jonah3:3] describing Nineveh as great city
Therefore we need to understand the specific nouns being used behind the 3 english words. Looking at how LXX translated [Joshua22:22], it gives us why use of the right noun is important, especially the proper nouns...
- LXX: God even God is the Lord, and God even God himself knows, and Israel he shall know; if we have transgressed before the Lord by apostasy, let him not deliver us this day.
- MT: “The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today
Another important verse in reference to angel is [Psa8:5], where the KJV translation from MT reads as follows
- For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
But the word for angels is not malak (H4397) but elohiym (H430). This if done according to the other rules will read
- For thou hast made him a little lower than God, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Therefore, we need to provide the actual noun reference where possible. This is one of the reason that I refer to the generally used word in NT, God, as
- the Most High, H5945 Elyone
- Yah H3068
- Abba G5
to distinguish that I am referring to the Creator and God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
